SRINAGAR: Voicing concern over rapid depletion of ground water and receding glaciers due to climate change and global warming, Governor NN Vohra today stressed the need for urgent initiatives to tackle the emerging environmental challenges.
“There is a need for well considered initiatives being immediately taken for tackling emerging environmental challenges which threaten the very survival of human existence on planet Earth,” Vohra said.
The Governor was inaugurating an international conference – “Sustainable Resource Development in the Himalaya” – organised by the Institute of Energy Research and Training of the Jammu University in collaboration with the Geological Society of London, at Leh in Ladakh region.
Recalling the devastating deluge in Ladakh in 2010, the Governor said, “no more time can be lost in preserving our natural resources and ensuring that these are utilised in a manner which yields sustainable dividends.”
He appealed to the Governmental agencies, civil society and responsible citizens to work closely together for dealing with all environmental challenges.
The Governor also suggested that Universities, research organisations and industrial houses should come up with well researched recommendations for developing Ladakh as a model of sustainable resource development. (AGENCIES)
