Uproar in RS over tax evasion on agricultural income

NEW DELHI : The Rajya Sabha today witnessed an uproar over the issue of rampant evasion of tax in the country by showing the income earned as being agricultural income. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Sharad Yadav of the JD-U said in the name of agriculture, a huge evasion of tax was going on in the country. Describing the matter as serious, Mr Yadav said in the name of farmers, a tax evasion to the tune of Rs 2,000 lakh crore has been done. He said he knew some industrialists who were saving tax by practising agriculture in their native villages. He added that some documents had been submitted in the Patna High Court regarding tax evasion.
Mayawati of the BSP said a high-level probe should be instituted in the evasion of tax in the name of agriculture. Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party said the farmers should not be subjected to any tax. Responding to the members’ concern, Leader of the House and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley assured them that there was no proposal to levy tax on farmers. ”A probe is on in cases of tax evasion in the name of agriculture. Many prominent people are involved in this. If after the probe these people are booked then the government should not be blamed for working with a ‘political vendetta’.” However, the members of Left parties, JD-U and All India Trinamool Congress continued to raise the issue. On this, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said no charge should be levelled against anyone without issuing any notice. Members of the BJP were also seen rising on their seats and creating uproar on the issue.
