Unscheduled power cuts lead to protests, road blockage

JAMMU, Aug 26: Expressing their resentment on the erratic power supply, inhabitants of Gharota and adjoining areas today come on roads and held a massive protest demonstration against the Government and Power Development Department (PDD) outside power station Ranjan.
Hundreds of inhabitants including men, women, youth and kids sat on road and blocked the road for couple of hours and burnt the tyres to stop the vehicular movement. Besides this they were shouting slogans against the Government and the PDD authorities for making the life miserable during the hot and humid weather conditions.
Talking to Excelsior one of the residents revealed that during the hot and humid weather conditions the inhabitants of the areas were facing hardships particularly the old age persons and the kids.
He added that power supply remains off for hours by which the water supply to the area has also got disrupted.
One of the students told Excelsior that power supply remains disrupted during the nights and their studies get hampered. He said that in their area unscheduled power cuts are galore. He further said that during the day long hectic activities to college, tuitions centers etc, they have the only night time to study and to complete their assignments, but cannot do so due to the unscheduled power cuts.
On getting information, senior officials of PDD and police led by SHO Jatinder Singh Samyal rushed the spot and assured the protestors that their demands regarding power supply and replacement of transformers will be redressed in the coming days.
After the assurance, the protestors dispersed and the vehicular movement was restored.
