It’s pleasure to welcome the arrival of a book on Information Seeking Behavior in Internet Era written by Dr. Bindu Sharma, Assistant Librarian in PG Department of Library & Information Science , University of Jammu and Prof. Sangita Gupta, author-cum-editor, a renowned name in the field of Library and Information Science particularly among Indian university fraternity. I provide here a brief review of the book for the students of M. Lib. Sc., B. Lib.Sc or any other course covering the information psychology/behaviour. The book is an introductory text on information seeking behaviour and is suitable for postgraduate and undergraduate course in Library Science.
The book is also available on line at the address http://www.get-morebooks. The book is useful as advancements in the information and communication technologies have changed the way the information is produced, processed and accessed. The development of World Wide Web has drastically changed the scenario of availability of electronic information. On-line retrieval of information has enhanced the speed and quality of service and the number of the users served. Now the user can access the information any time irrespective of geographical boundaries. But due to overabundance of information on the internet, users may get difficulty in accessing the required information. Therefore providing the adequate / required information in time is a challenging task for the information professionals. Hence information professionals need to be aware of the information requirements as well as the information seeking behaviour of the users.
The information seeking behaviour of the users varies depending upon their specific requirements. The present study has been undertaken to study the information seeking behaviour of faculty members using internet at various universities of Jammu and Kashmir. The research is conducted to identify the purpose, nature and the type of information required by the faculty members, to find out the various search engines and web browsers frequently used by them. Moreover to find out if they use any advanced search facilities and the problems faced by them while carrying out the searching on internet.
The book, which was formally published on August 2014, consists of 05 chapters and contains more than 50 figures and tables. The book provides simple and lucid explanation of the concepts used in the book.
First chapter starts with the introduction of the five universities taken as the study area, need, justification, and objectives of the study and the description of the various aspects of the terms information, information seeking and information seeking behaviour.
Second chapter explains the internet and its evolution.
Third chapter gives the details of the various past studies carried out in India as well as abroad.
Analysis of the data collected by distributing the questionnaires to the faculty members is analyzed in the chapter four. The analysis is done by using various statistical techniques such as co-relation, regression etc.. Moreover the relationship between faculty members’ gender, age, years of experience, academic discipline, amount of computer education, computer access and the use of internet is found out.
Fifth chapter gives the findings and testing of the hypotheses. Conclusions and suggestions are provided in the chapter six. These suggestions will help the librarians in the academic institutions to develop a system where there is no barrier in the fast and specific seeking of information by the faculty members.
At the end of every chapter of the book, summary of the chapter and references are provided which are useful for quick revision of the concepts, illustrations learnt and validating citations. By providing acknowledgement, table of contents, the author has honestly added to the advantage of the book. So the book is moderate text book for the beginners and for the students of library and information science who intend to start their career as information scientist.
