Unchecked corruption, misconduct in four lane project: Ex-MLA

JAMMU, May 7: Former MLA Ramban and senior Congress leader, Ashok Kumar has claimed corruption and mismanagement behind dilapidated condition of NH-44 from Udhampur to Banihal.
In a handout, Kumar said corruption and mismanagement in the process of construction of four-lane project of NH-44 in last seven years has triggered man-made landslides, loss of innocent lives, agricultural land and human settlement and huge ecological imbalance in Ramban district.
He said despite heavy penalties imposed on the concerned companies for violating norms, not even a single penny has been utilize to compensate the damaged caused.
“Moreover, the air pollution has increased tremendously in the area further risking innocent lives,” he maintained.
The Congress leader further said that local commuters have to face daily traffic menace risking their lives and even army convoys have to face difficulties in reaching Kashmir.
He stressed upon the government of India to immediately constitute a monitoring and assessment Committee to save the lives of thousands of people in the region.
