JUBA, Feb 10 : The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has condemned an attack on a humanitarian convoy escorted by peacekeepers in Aniydi Payam, Bor South County, Jonglei State.
Nicolas Haysom, the special representative of the UN Secretary-General for South Sudan and head of UNMISS, said the incident happened when the convoy passed through Macdit, 60 km from Bor Town.
He said a group of armed men emerged from the bush, and one opened fire on the UN vehicles, damaging a UNMISS vehicle.
There were no casualties, however, and UNMISS peacekeepers returned fire and repelled the attackers.
“This attack threatened the lives of humanitarians delivering vital assistance to communities in need as well as peacekeepers providing protection. It is utterly unacceptable,” Haysom said in a statement issued Friday evening in the South Sudanese capital of Juba.
The UN official lauded the government of Jonglei State for quickly deploying a joint protection team of local forces to the site to provide support and called for investigations and accountability for the perpetrators. ( UNI)
