UIET students continue protest; ABVP unfolds calendar of agitation

JAMMU, Feb 20: Continuing the protest against State Government move of taking over management of University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) from Jammu University, the affected students and ABVP activists today staged demonstrations at various educational institutions of Jammu City demanding original status to UIET as constituent of JU.
The protesting students and ABVP activists also performed a “Sadhbudhi Yagya” for the mental stability to State Government  outside the JU Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat, where indefinite protest dharna is being staged for the last five days.
In support of UIET, some students of University of Kashmir, led by State Joint Secretary Mustafa Ali joined the protesting students and sat on dharna.
Similarly, the Class IV Employee Union of University of Jammu also extended its support to the UIET students. Vijay Sharma, president of the Union assured that they would also join the dharna if UIET is not restored to JU.
In various colleges of the city,   protests were held by students of respective colleges for extending support to UIET students’ demand.
At GCW Gandhi Nagar, protest was led by Students Union Secretary Sonali Vaid while at GCW Parade, ABVP College president Komal Mengi led the protesting girls.
In  Government Polytechnic,  Lakhan Sharma led the protest while at  Central University Jammu,  ABVP State Joint Secretary Anubhav Sharma led the protesting students.
These protesting students in different colleges and institutions announced to further intensify the struggle if the State Government does not roll back its decision of taking over control of UIET.
Meanwhile, ABVP and UIET students today held a joint press conference and announced to further intensify the ongoing protest for restoration of UIET to JU.  The press conference was addressed by ABVP State Secretary Deepak Gupta and the students of UIET,  namely Taksh Jandyal, Saksham Koushal, Sheetal and Harshul.
Terming the Government decision as an attack on the University’s autonomy, they said that  Government notification of taking away the constituent college of UIET from JU was not acceptable by the student community.
Deepak said  that setting up of  GCET Janglote as another engineering college was welcome step but  UIET must remain as a constituent of JU.
Listing the agitational programme, the ABVP announced to hold press conferences at district level tomorrow, which will be followed by  signature campaign throughout State on February 22, protest demonstrations along with submission of memorandum to CM and  Governor through DC on February, submission of memorandum to elected representatives (MLAs, MPs) on February 24, torching the effigy of State Government at unit level on February 25 and dharna by students of UIET along with their family members outside the JU VC office.
