UG, PG doctors protest outside GMC against power cuts

JAMMU, June 4: Frustrated over frequent power cuts particularly during the night, Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) Doctors of Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu held a protest late last night against Power Development Department in front of Hospital gate.
A large number of UG and PG doctors residing in Boys’ hostel of Medical College late last night assembled at Bakshi Nagar Chowk in front of College gate and raised slogans against PDD for frequent power cuts in the hostel.
The protesting doctors alleged that due to scheduled and unscheduled power cuts in the hostel, they are facing multiple problems and power cuts in the night have affected their study badly. They said for last three days, PDD has increased power cuts due to which they spent these three whole nights in dark that too when the mercury is touching 43 degree celsius.
They said such large scale power curtailment by the PDD has also affected water supply in the hostel and they have to bring water for their daily use from outside.
Criticizing College administration for ignoring their plight, the protesting doctors also raised slogans against them for not providing any alternate solution when they are very well familiar with their sufferings.
The protest continued till 2 am in the night during which protesting doctors burnt rubber tyres on the road and disrupted traffic movement. Later, Principal, GMC, Jammu, Dr Zahid Geelani reached the spot and pacified the protesting doctors by assuring installation of generators in the hostels. However, as a temporary measure, he got opened some halls of Red Cross building near GMC for the doctors in view of their examinations.
On the assurance of the GMC Principal, the protesting doctors dispersed and lifted the blockade.
