JAMMU, Oct 7: Police today disengaged two Special Police Officers (SPOs) for selling illicit liquor in holy town of Katra, the base camp of Mata Vaishno Devi ji shrine, where sale and purchase of liquor is prohibited.
They have been identified as Nazir Ahmed, SPO No. 361 and Joginder Singh, SPO No. 516, both posted in Reasi.
SSP Reasi Mohammad Sharief Chouhan said the SPOs had been smuggling liquor from Reasi to Katra town. Katra police nabbed them today along with a consignment of liquor and booked them under FIR No. 179/2013 and 191/2013 under Section 48-A Excise Act.
Both of them have been disengaged from the services, Mr Chouhan said.
He added that the SPOs were being questioned as to how long they were smuggling liquor in Katra town and whether more persons were involved in the illegal trade.
The SPOs used to purchase liquor in Reasi and smuggle it to Katra in uniform to avoid detection. They were selling liquor in Katra at exorbitant rates.
