JAMMU, May 13: Two shops and five rooms worth lakhs of rupees were completely gutted after a major fire broke out at Channi Himmat area this evening, officials said.
However, no loss of life or injury was reported in the incident.
Officials said the fire broke out at around 4:10 PM due to a suspected short-circuit in a sweet shop owned by one Deputy Ram Thapa, son of Rattan Lal Thapa, a resident of RS Pura. The shop was located in a building owned by one Surinder Gupta at Ward No 3, Channi Himmat.
They said the flames spread rapidly and engulfed the adjoining grocery store belonging to one Sanjay Gupta, son of Dina Nath Gupta, resident of Sector 3, Channi Himmat.
Officials said the fire also spread to the upper floor and roof portion of nearby house owned by one Ashok Gupta, son of Rattan Lal, resident of House number 204, Sector No 3, Channi Himmat.
Soon after the incident, they said teams of Fire and Emergency Services and Jammu and Kashmir Police rushed to the spot and launched a firefighting operation.
Around 4 to 5 fire tenders were pressed into the service to control the blaze, they said, adding that after hectic efforts, the fire was brought under control, preventing it from spreading further to nearby structures.
However, a sweet shop, grocery store, and five rooms on the upper floor and roof portion of the house were completely gutted in the fire, officials said.
According to them, household goods, furniture, shop items and other valuables worth several lakhs were reduced to ashes.
Police have taken cognizance of the incident while the exact amount of loss is being addressed.
