TUV Rheinland gears up to certify electronic products in India

NEW DELHI, Feb 24:  German safety certification firm TUV Rheinland today said it is ready to serve electronics and IT clients in India to help them meet the April 3 deadline for mandatory registration of some products with BIS.
The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITy) had in a notification in October announced that with effect from April 3, 15 electronic product categories such as video games, laptops and microwave ovens would need to mandatorily register with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for ensuring safety standards.
“TUV Rheinland has taken proactive measures to support this initiative by the government and geared up to support the stakeholders by means of ramping up infrastructure, manpower and operating in multiple shifts to meet the deadline,” said TUV Rheinland India’s Country Head (Product Testing and Certification) Kalyan Varma.
It is estimated that around 5,000 to 7,000 products will be impacted by the new regulations, which call for mandatory testing of these products in the BIS recognised laboratories.
“Currently, there are five BIS-recognised laboratories for the regulatory compliance testing. TUV Rheinland (India) is the latest addition and the only international certification body with full scope of recognition,” he said.
Varma said a lot many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s), importers and distributors have started approaching the laboratories to get the testing done for entire range of products.
TUV Rheinland is assisting its customers across the world for compliance to the new regulation through its market access team present in 500 locations across 65 countries. (PTI)
