Supreme Court has cancelled 122 telecom permits including those of Tata Telecom operating in three regions of J&K, North East and Assam. Shut down of Tata telecom service (TTSL) in our State becomes effective from 18 January 2013. The number of consumers of this service runs in lakhs in the State, and obviously shutting down of this vital provider will put entire communication system of the State in a scenario of chaos and disorder unless some timely alternative is found. Keeping in mind the sensitivity of the State owing to less than normal conditions prevailing in some of its parts, sudden suspension of a vital service is bound to create many difficulties. The Union Telecom Ministry would be well advised to consider in advance an alternative to the outgoing TTSL provider before the situation becomes critical. In the age of advanced information technology, millions of people living in these states and utilising the services of the telecom major Tata, cannot be left in lurch. The ministry should waste no time in hammering out an option.
