Trump telephones to congratulate PM Modi, fixes meet at G-20 summit

WASHINGTON, May 25: President Donald Trump on Friday telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi to congratulate him on his sweeping victory in the country’s general elections.
“Just spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi where I congratulated him on his big political victory,” Trump said via Twitter. “He is a great man and leader for the people of India – they are lucky to have him.”
PM Modi steered his Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) to a landslide victory on Thursday by winning 303 seats out of 542 seats, which went on polls in the seven phases Lok Sabha election between April 11 and May 19.
The two leaders also agreed to meet at the G-20 Summit, to be held on June 28 and 29, in Osaka, Japan.
“The leaders look forward to seeing one another at the G-20 Summit in Osaka, where the US, India, and Japan will hold a trilateral meeting to pursue their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the White House said in a statement.
The White House said that the President and Prime Minister pledged to continue to strengthen the United States-India strategic partnership, building on the achievements of the last two years.
Earlier on Thursday, congratulating Prime Minister Modi on his “BIG” election victory, President Trump tweeted, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP party on their BIG election victory! Great things are in store for the US-India partnership with the return of PM Modi at the helm.”
I look forward to continuing our important work together!” Trump wrote.
PM Modi thanked him for the congratulatory message and saying, “Thank you Donald Trump! This victory represents the aspirations of a nation of 1.3 billion people.”
“I too am looking forward to working closely with you for closer bilateral ties, which also augur well for global peace and prosperity,” PM Modi tweeted.
