JAMMU, Apr 27: For paying tributes to Maj Mukund Vardarajan and Sepoy Vikram Singh, who attained martyrdom while fighting terrorist at Shopian in Kashmir on last Friday, a special ceremony was held today at New Delhi.
Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra, the Northern Army Commander, who is also the Colonel of the Rajput Regiment, paid his tributes and honour to these brave hearts on behalf of the country and the Northern Army.
Earlier, a wreath laying ceremony was also organized in the honour of the gallant sons of motherland, at Badamibagh cantonment, Srinagar where the soldiers of Chinar Corps paid their tributes to compatriot and soldier.
Maj Mukund Vardarajan and Sepoy Vikram Singh had attained martyrdom on April 25 during a fierce encounter at village Qazipathri in Qazigund in which three dreaded terrorists of the Hizbul Mujahideen were also eliminated.
Major Mukund Vardarajan, an outstanding soldier and an exceptional human being, was born on April 12, 1983 and belonged to Tambram, Tamil Nadu. He had a passion for the forces from childhood and was commissioned into 22nd Battalion of the Rajput Regiment on Mar 18, 2006 from Officers Training Academy, Chennai. Nicknamed ‘Maddy’, he had a fine sense of humour easily endearing himself to his fellow officers and troops. A keen professional soldier, he excelled in training and lead from the front by personal example. He is survived by his wife Indhu Mukund and three year old daughter Arshea. He had been posted to 44 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion in December 2012.
Sepoy Vikram Singh belonged to Rewari, Haryana which has a fine tradition of soldiering. He was born on March 15, 1983 and enrolled into 17th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment of the Army on October 7, 2002 and was serving in 44 Rashtriya Rifles since December 19, 2012. A soft – spoken gentle giant, Vikram was the epitome of soldiering excellence. He participated in many operations, always volunteering for risky tasks. Vikram is survived by his wife Sushila and son, Master Abhishek Kumar.
