GANDERBAL, May 29: A major tragedy was narrowly avoided on Friday when a loaded trailer vehicle veered off the Srinagar-Kargil highway and fell into a deep gorge near Zojila in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Officials said the accident occurred near Pani Matha on the Zojila axis when the 14-wheeler trailer, en route to Kargil, reportedly lost control and tumbled down the mountainside.
The vehicle, registered as JK01BC-2359, suffered severe damage in the mishap.
Despite the impact, both the driver and conductor escaped unharmed, officials said.
Police and civil authorities immediately reached the site and initiated rescue and assessment operations. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
The Zojila stretch of the Srinagar-Kargil highway is known for its challenging terrain, sharp curves and steep gradients, making it prone to road accidents, particularly during periods of heavy traffic. (KNC)
