SRINAGAR : Despite slippery road conditions, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was open for one-way traffic on Monday.
However, traffic will be allowed only after clearing about 1500 Kashmir bound trucks and other vehicles which were stopped at different places to avoid any accident in view of the slippery road conditions on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel, a senior traffic police official said.
Meanwhile, the national highway, the only road connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley and historic 86-km-long Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained shut for the past about a month.
There is no possibility of reopening of these roads before April due to accumulation of several feet of snow which has not frozen, said the official.
He said only one-way traffic will ply on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway to avoid traffic jam and accidents due to road widening, slippery conditions and intermittent landslides which are being cleared immediately.
Today traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no vehicle, including security force convoy, would be allowed from opposite direction, he said. However, he said vehicles from Srinagar will be allowed only after 1500 trucks and other vehicles, stopped at Banihal, Magarkote , Ramban and others are cleared.
These Kashmir bound vehicles could not proceed due to slippery road conditions on both sides of the Jawhar tunnel last night when the mercury dropped below freezing point.
All Jammu bound vehicles have been stopped at different places, including Qazigund, Anantnag and this side of the tunnel. These vehicles will be allowed to proceed towards Jammu once the stranded vehicles from Jammu are cleared, he said.
