JAMMU, Mar 1: Traffic movement on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was disrupted several times for 2nd consecutive day today due to frequent shooting stones incidents at Cafeteria Morh, Ramban.
“The intermittent shooting of stones from the steep hills continued overnight and it was in the morning when traffic movement remained smooth for some hours,” an official of Traffic Police department said.
He said today one-way traffic was allowed from Srinagar to Jammu and the traffic movement was normal till 12 noon during which most of the vehicles including trucks and passenger vehicles were cleared but from 12 noon to 4 pm, the traffic almost came to stand still due to large scale shooting stone incidents at Cafeteria Morh.
“The shooting of stones are still occurring intermittently and there is every apprehension of more shooting stone incidents as well as landslides as the porous hills along the highway at Cafeteria Morh has become steep. However, the men and machinery of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) are on the spot and clearing the stones and boulders whenever shooting of stones are occurring,” the official said.
“However, traffic flow has come down now as most of the vehicles have been cleared despite single lane road and frequent disruptions at Cafeteria Morh,” he further added. He also informed that snow clearance operation was also going on war-footing to restore traffic on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh National Highway, the only road linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir, which remained closed for the past over two months due to accumulation of snow.
It may be mentioned here that the traffic was suspended on Saturday afternoon due to fresh landslides at Cafeteria Morh in Ramban area and fresh snowfall on the highway and was partially restored in the evening due to frequent shooting stone incidents.
