Toddler among four killed, 4 injured as vehicle carrying labourers plunges into gorge

RAMBAN, June 30: Four people, including a two-year-old child, were killed and as many injured when a vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a deep gorge along Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, early this morning.

According to the reports, a Tata Mobile vehicle bearing registration number JK02AP-4588 carrying labourers belonging to Chhattisgarh, was on its way from Jammu to Srinagar when it plunged into a 250-300 meters deep gorge in Ramsoo area. The mishap occurred at around 5.30 am today, just 100 m ahead of Khooni Nallah bridge.
On getting information of the tragic accident, Ramban police along with QRT, UTDRF and Army launched a search and rescue operation which lasted around three hours. Four people, including the baby, were rescued but the child later succumbed to his injuries at District Hospital Ramban. He was identified as Aryan, son of Deepak Sahu, resident of Chhattisgarh.
Three others including driver of the vehicle were found dead during rescue operation taking the number of casualties to four. The other three deceased persons were identified as driver of the vehicle, Sunil Singh (31) son of late Shamsher Singh of Rakh Burn (Jammu), Santra Devi (43) wife of Maya Ram of Sahranghar (Chhattisgarh) and Dhuj Bhai (42) wife of Bagirath of Saharnghar (Chhattisgarh).
Meanwhile, the injured persons namely Narayan Manji (21) son of Ramesh Manji, Dinesh Kumar (19) son of Baghi Rath, Maghe Lal (17) son of Amar Singh and Dhoop Chand (21) son of Jagan Nath, all residents of Chhattisgarh, were hospitalized.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban, P D Nitya told Excelsior that as per eye witnesses, the accident occurred when the driver of the ill fated vehicle tried to give way to a truck coming from opposite side on the narrow road.
The officer said all the injured persons have been shifted to DH Ramban and being provided required treatment while bodies of the deceased have been sent for postmortem. “A case in this connection has been registered at police station Ramban and further investigation initiated,” the SSP added.
