Timely surgery at Narayana Hospital saves life of pilgrim

KATRA, Nov 19: Doctors at SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital saved the life of a teen-aged pilgrim by operating her timely for Internal Hernia.
A 14-year-old female from UP who had come as a pilgrim with her family to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, complained of abdomen pain, loose motions and vomiting and was referred from Medical unit Shrine Board for treatment to SMVDNSH.
The patient was received at Emergency department of SMVD Narayana Superspeciality Hospital and resuscitated by ER Team headed by Dr Suhail Nazki. Surgical consultation was sought for the patient. In view of clinical suspicion, CT abdomen was performed and the patient was diagnosed by Radiology (Dr Geetanjali& team) with a rare ailment namely Internal Hernia in which the intestines get blocked inside a defect within the abdomen.
The teen-aged patient was shifted to OR within 30 minutes of arrival to hospital. She was operated by GI Surgery team (Dr Suhail Khuroo and Dr Ajaz Wani) with help of anaesthesia team led by Dr Trupti Modi. During surgery, it was found that the small intestine had herniated through mesentry (attachment of intestine) and was leading to strangulation (Decrease in blood supply) of the part of intestine.
The part of intestine was delivered back and the defect was closed without need of removing the part of bowel. The Patient recovered well in post-operation period and was discharged in stable condition.
Briefing about such cases, Dr Suhail Khuroo, Consultant GI Surgeon at SMVDNSH exemplified the importance of timely diagnosis and management of patients. He said clinical judgement and availability of modern diagnostic techniques are the keystones for providing better healthcare services.
Pertaining to the case, Dr Khuroo and Dr Wani said that internal hernias are a rare entity diagnosed after keen clinical suspicion and improved radiology. Internal hernias could lead to gangrene of affected portion of intestine/organs if not treated timely, they added.
