Time not ripe for Panchayat polls: Farooq

Excelsior Correspondent
Srinagar, Feb 3:Former Chief Minister and president of National Conference Dr Farooq Abdullah today said that situation is not conducive for Panchayat polls in Kashmir.
“The Government has been unable to conduct Parliament elections on a single seat of Anantnag Parliament constituency. This is just a small part of Kashmir. How can it conduct Panchayat elections in entire State?”, Abdullah questioned while talking to reporters in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Abdullah questioned the State Government over the holding of Panchayat polls slated this month. He said that if it could not conduct the polls in Anantnag for last two years how could it conduct polls in entire Kashmir.
The NC president said that PDP president and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had promised revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). “Now she has said that the atmosphere is not conducive for AFSPA to go. She can go to any extent for power”, he said.
He said that people should not hope anything from this party on AFSPA as it is the founder of PDP Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who brought AFSPA to this place.
Abdullah demanded end to bloodshed for restoration of normalcy in Kashmir. He said Kashmiris want to live in peace and want prosperity of this place. “This can be possible only after bloodshed ends”.
He expressed concern over growing violence especially in Shopian where several people were killed including a 10 year old boy.
Meanwhile, Abdullah has also asked the Government to expedite the work on the Z-morh tunnel.
Earlier, Abdullah, along with MLA Kangan Mian Altaf Ahmad and political advisor to Omar Abdullah Tanvir Sadiq, visited Gund to condole the demise of noted social activist and ex -NC block president Gund Late Haji Sheikh Mohammad Yousuf who passed away last month.
