Once there was a farmer who lived in a village. The man was poor. He tried to make his living from farming, but could not earn enough for a nice house, good possessions, or fine clothes. He looked so ragged that some of the people in his neighborhood made fun of him. Yet the man was content with what he had. He was a great lover of God and spent his free time in prayer and meditation to the Lord.
Some of the man’s friends advised him to make something of himself instead of wasting his time in prayer to God. The man was happy with his own life, but they kept nagging him so much to do something about his circumstances that a seed of doubt was planted in his mind. He began thinking that maybe he could be happier if he were richer.
One night, the farmer had a dream. He dreamt that a divine being told him to go into the city where he would find a huge treasure. When the farmer awoke, being influenced by his friends to seek wealth, he decided to listen to his dream. He undertook the journey to the city. He had not traveled to the city before and was unfamiliar with its laws.
A chief of police found him wandering around and picked him up. He brought him to the police station.
The police chief inquired, “What are you doing wandering away day and night?”
The farmer explained, “I am in search of a treasure. I had a dream and it told me I would find a vast treasure here.”
The police chief said, “You are a fool. I have had many dreams about finding a treasure. They are only dreams. I ignore every one of them. They are useless dreams. For example, once I dreamed that I should go to a poor hut in a village outside the city. The hut had a stream passing by it. There was a small farm nearby, but the house was a poor one. I was told in the dream that I would find a huge treasure there. But I never went there because visions are not real.”
As the police chief was describing the house, the farmer had a shock. The house being described sounded exactly like his own!
The chief of police sent him back to his village. The man was overjoyed at the possibility that the treasure he was seeking might just be in his own front yard.
The farmer went to the spot described by the police chief. He began digging. Sure enough, he uncovered a large treasure chest filled with enough wealth to make him a rich man. He was amazed that all this time there was a hidden treasure right by his own home.
This story describes our condition. We are searching for happiness and love all over the world. Little do we realize that true wealth, true happiness, and true love are waiting within us.
We think that happiness is outside ourselves. We think it lies in wealth, name and fame, possessions, and relationships. But true happiness lies within. God lies within us. God’s love is within. There is nothing in the outer world that can compare to that. Instead of seeking the true treasure outside ourselves, we should sit in meditation and find the true wealth within. Then we will find our lives filled with love, bliss, and eternal peace and happiness.
