Social Media- what strikes us- Facebook, Twitter, whatsaap? But practically social media is a very broader term. It is that world where people interact freely, share ideas, know about each other, etc. Social Media is around us since ancient times. It’s evidence is clear and still on the walls of the caves in the form of wall paintings. These were all social media where people used to interact through one medium or the other. Then, there came Internet, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, and so on. Now the question arises- Whether this social media is having a positive or negative impact on the society?
People say contact with the real world is lost. Cellphones do not bring us close but takes us away from the people sitting next to us. Today people prefer to text or call a person than personally going to meet them. This increases the distance between people and the device which was supposed to bring people close is becoming the key factor that makes them un – social .
I don’t agree with this perspective as it is these cellphones which reduce the distance between the people . With their help, people can remain in touch with the ones living in other countries. In such a fast running scenario, these appliances are the one’s which help us remain in contact with everyone.
Do you have a facebook? This is the first question of today’s generation. Everything has a good side and a bad side. It completely depends upon us how to use it. People gets cautious regarding its use by the teenagers and students. But now-a-days, social media plays an important role in student’s life. There are countless of social networking sites that have created broad connections among students. They are getting to explore and experience the world not only by books and assignments, but also by adapting social media. It helps teens stay connected to each other even if they are thousand miles away and keeps us up-to-date with what’s going on around the world. It has provided people with the opportunity to connect with others and build better relationships with friends with whom we are unable to meet personally and letting them know about our life and take input about their lives and events happening with them. Teens also receive digital news from social sites rather than turning on news channels or reading newspapers. It’s amazing how fast news spread on these sites. More than 70% of students receive most of the news stories via Facebook and Twitter. Thus, making the teens more well informed about the national and global news than would be otherwise. Social media sites like twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and you tube are changing the way the world does business. I think this is in response to our desires to connect with one another.
Bill Cosby rightly says-
“Social networking helps reach people easier and quicker”
Internet is a blessing in disguise. Though it helps the world become a smaller place, it also exposes one to perils of many sorts. Photos, videos on a social networking site can make one extremely vulnerable and fall prey to prying eyes. It’s for such reasons that US President Barack Obama has banned his teenage girls from using Facebook for few initial years. Pros and cons have to be judiciously taken care of.Parents should give an hour a day to use Internet and supervise them at the same time. And as kids grow older, they’ll themselves understand the realities and would be able to face the world. In such a growing world, use of Internet is a top priority for expanding the mental level of kids.
The problem is that everyone sees and uses social media from a different perspective. Our mindset determines how we see the things and respond to what we see. Today our mindsets are ones of fear and mistrust – these emotions then becomes the basis of our reactions. When we are locked into a mindset, fixed into a set frame, we tend to live on auto- pilot, and starts reacting accordingly. It’s time to Re-think.
Social Media is improving our country’s scenario by making the fast moves. We need to understand what is the correct side of the coin. It has become the part of the modern teenage lifestyle. It makes our life so much easier and much more effecient. It has become an essential part of our communication culture that cannot be taken away easily, because we have become so dependant on it. Without social media, we won’t be able to connect with people the way we do now!
