Thambidurai elected as Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI :  Dr M Thambidurai, leader of the AIADMK  party in the Lok Sabha, was today elected unopposed Deputy  Speaker of the House.
Motion for his election as Deputy Speaker was moved by 13 members, including Home Minister Rajnath Singh.    Dr Thambidurai was deputy speaker in the House from 1985  to 1989 and had held various ministerial posts in the Atal  Bihari Vajpayee government.
He was first elected as a member to the eighth Lok Sabha in  1984 from Dharmapuri and was subsequently elected to the ninth,   12th, 15th and 16th Lok Sabha.
He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Karur in Tamil  Nadu and has been serving as the leader of AIADMK in the House  since 2009.
The deputy speaker presides over house proceedings and conducts
business in the absence of the speaker. By convention, the post is
usually offered to a member of an opposition party.  (AGENCIES)
