JAMMU, May 8: Department of Paediatrics at SMGS Hospital, Government Medical College, Jammu, in collaboration with the IAP Jammu Branch, organized an awareness camp on World Thalassemia Day at Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), Jammu, with a commitment towards spreading awareness about Thalassemia and its prevention.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar Digra, HoD Paediatrics and coordinator-in-chief of the Thalassemia Day Care Centre, SMGS Hospital, spoke in detail about the management of Thalassemia, with special emphasis on its prevention. He encouraged the students to undergo thalassemia carrier testing and explained its significance in preventing the disease in future generations through awareness and premarital screening.
He also delivered a special lecture under the “Nasha Mukt Abhiyan” on substance abuse awareness. He sensitized the students about the harmful effects of substance abuse, ways to prevent addiction, and how individuals struggling with substance abuse can seek help and come out of it through proper support, counselling, and rehabilitation.
Dr Sanjana Sharma, Associate Professor and coordinator of Thalassemia Day Care Centre, SMGS Hospital, delivered an informative lecture on clinical features, inheritance and diagnosis of thalassemia. She emphasized the need to create awareness among the younger generation regarding this inherited blood disorder.
Principal GCET, Prof Sameru Sharma stated that such initiatives are highly valuable in creating a healthy and socially responsible society.
The programme witnessed active participation from students and faculty members and concluded with an interactive session aimed at promoting health awareness, social responsibility and preventive health care among the youth.
Among the members of the organizing committee present on the occasion were Sanjeev Gupta (Nodal Officer NMBA/NCORD), Dr Raman Gupta (NSS coordinator), Sat Dev, Dr Deepika Sharma, along with several other staff members of GCET Jammu.
