JAMMU, Jan 29: Teachers Guild Jammu and Kashmir has suggested introduction of Disaster Risk Reduction as a separate subject in school syllabus of all levels in Jammu and Kashmir State, which has recently witnessed natural catastrophes.
“For this purpose J&K Board of School Education, State Institute of Education, Jammu and Kashmir and all District Institutes of Education and Trainings should start a joint venture without any delay and prepare the framework for review and opinion from educationists, parents and general public,” said Nasir Ahmed Qurashi, State president of Teachers Guild Jammu and Kashmir while chairing a meeting, here today.
The meeting was attended by all the members of Teachers Guild besides teachers of various educational institutions of Jammu district.
Qurashi said that Jammu and Kashmir falls in such zones of India, where natural disasters like floods, snowstorms, earthquakes, winds, landslides, thundering, lightning and cloudbursts are occurred frequently and last year’s natural calamity broke all the records of previous disasters. No doubt that such disasters are an act of God but there is a role of human being too. There is lack of knowledge about respect, importance and safety of science, geography, geology, environment, forests, climatic changes and water resources, but there is also lack of awareness regarding preparedness, management and mitigation whenever terrestrial and celestial calamities occurred, he said and added that
Disaster Risk Reduction should also be a part of In-service Teachers Training Programme and D Ed., B Ed and M Ed. courses so that the teachers should be able to teach it to the students from elementary to higher levels.
Vijay Kumar Sharma, general secretary of the Teachers Guild demanded that the schools and community based disaster risk reduction programmes should be organized at school and college level so that more awareness can be spread among the students.
