Tax evasion foiled at Lower Munda

KULGAM, Feb 18:  Commercial Taxes Department at Lower Munda today foiled an attempt of tax evasion by a trader after seizing wooden flooring worth Rs 15 lakh from a truck that was carrying rice.
Giving details Commercial Taxes Officer, Lower Munda Checkpost, Abdul Hamid Ganai said that a vehicle bearing No. JK13A/1759 approached the checkpost for clearance of FCI rice.
Ganai said that the driver of the vehicle showed FCI challan of 9000 kilogrammes of rice consigned to FCI godowns Mirbazar, Anantnag and supplied from FCI Depot Jammu. The driver managed to clear the vehicle at Toll Post and Checkpost as FCI only. However, after seeing the driver suspiciously in the yard a team of officials led by Inspector Majad Afzal and Hakeem Akbar put the vehicle under detailed physical inspection at the Commercial Taxes Checkpost.
“After detailed check of the truck we managed to recover 2654 pieces Thali Floor Wood measuring about 152 feet which were kept hidden under the FCI rice very cleverly both by the driver and owner of goods”, Ganai said.
He said goods were being imported from Jammu into Kashmir valley illegally and were without documents. “The goods along with vehicle has been seized u/67(10), 67(5),67(9)a & 69(1)O of J&K VAT Act 2005 vide seizure memo no. 493/LM/CT dated 18-02-2015 and proceedings have been initiated against the driver and owner of the goods”, he said.
The officer said that the market value of the goods is over Rs 15 lakh and the proposed penalty in the case is over two lakhs. He said that some drivers and dealers are adopting some new tactics just to evade the tax and warned that stern action will be taken against them.
