Tawi Andolan holds meet on water conservation

JAMMU, June 1: Tawi Andolan under the leadership of convener, Tawi Andolan and Namami Ganga Project, today held a meeting with civil society on water conservation.
Sarpanches of various villages of Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts, other civil society members and environmentalists participated in the meet, which discussed revival of water bodies like ponds, wells, boulies and other traditional sources.
The participants also spoke on the importance of water conservation and pledged to extend full support to Tawi Andolan. They shared their concern over vanishing or encroached water bodies like ponds and felt the need to revive them.
Pathania from Kalibari, Kathua shared the list of 49 ponds of the Kandi area from Lakhanpur to Jammu and stressed on the revival of the same before the rainy season as per directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Chander Mohan Sharma, apprised the gathering about the formation of a separate wing named ‘Sangrakshan and Swash Abhiyan’ for conservation of water bodies under Tawi Andolan.
It was decided in the meeting that the Abhiyan will coordinate with the village committees already existing or newly formed by the villagers for revival of such water bodies. Abhiyan will also coordinate with the local authorities so that things move in a time bound manner.
Dr Prem Sharma of Tawi Andolan suggested that BDOs of various blocks should be requested to adopt minimum two ponds. He said if 30 BDOs come forward they can revive 60 ponds to start with.
Prof Bhola Nath, Abhishek Sharma, Anju Dogra and Joginder Khajuria also gave suggestions and their support for the noble cause of ‘Jal hai to Kal hai’.
