SRINAGAR, June 7: The Communist Party of India (M) legislator, Mohammad Yousuf Targami, today alleged that tourist destination Sonamarg in the Central Kashmir district of Ganderbal has been turned into concrete jungle as unplanned construction galore.
Tarigami said that the inquiries and suggestions given in the reports about illegal constructions in Sonamarg have never been implemented. He wanted that the directions be passed for ban on any construction at the tourist resort.
“Sonamarg has been turned into a concrete jungle. Government in the past has ordered inquiry which has been completed but no action has been taken on the recommendations made in the report. The fresh constructions should be stopped forthwith at the ecologically fragile place,” Tarigami said. He said the rampant construction at Sonamarg has defeated the purpose of promoting tourism.
The Congress MLA also raised the issue of unplanned construction going on at tourist destinations including Gulmarg.
Earlier, as the session started, Assembly witnessed noisy scenes as ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and Opposition members wanted to raise their issues before Question-Hour today.
As the Speaker entered the House, members from the BJP and opposition were on their toes, demanding that they should be allowed to raise their issues before Question-Hour. BJP members raised the issue that Jammu district has been allocated less yearly development funds as compared to some other districts of the State.
Development funds allocated to Jammu district this year is less than funds allotted to other districts, including Srinagar district, they alleged.
MLA Ashraf Mir said that Srinagar has got least fund allocated followed by Jammu. Congress MLA, G M Saroori said that Chenab valley has also got less funds of around Rs 9-10 crore.
