Sopore town in Baramulla district has been a hub of militant activities from the very beginning when lawlessness broke out in the State. The town has a vast hinterland that provides hideouts to the militants after they strike terror here or there. Moreover, the easiest points of infiltration into the Valley are to be found in Tithwal/Tangdhar sector that lies in the backyard of Sopore town. In early years of militancy, Sopore was infested with various terrorist groups so much so that their writ ran over a wide area for a long time. Finally, they were uprooted and normalcy was restored. Nevertheless, it seems that militants have reassembled there and are now inducting new methodology of their mission of subverting peace in Kashmir. In a new bid, the militants have begun tampering with the communication system. They had installed a device atop of some mobile tower which gave them wider range of clandestine communication. Recently the militants found that the device had been removed. They suspected the local franchises of providers to be the source of dismantling the device and, therefore, unleashed terror against them. Iqra Communications, the outlet of a provider was attacked, one employee was killed and two more were injured. As a result of attacks on communication outlets in Sopore, towers in Sopore and Baramulla have been closed and communication has seized to be in operation at the moment. This is precisely what militants want and has succeeded.
It is not a small thing that militants have succeeded in disrupting entire mobile communication system in a district. Security forces shall have to upgrade surveillance and security measures without loss of time. It is true that an FIR has been registered for attacks on communication centres in Sopore resulting in the killing of a person and injuring some others. However, so far no arrests of alleged assailants have been made. The police should lose no time in identifying the miscreants and bringing them to book.
