UDHAMPUR, Aug 7: A joint meeting of ‘Rotary Club Udhampur’ and ‘The Udhampur Rotary Eye & General Welfare Foundation’ was held today at KLSM Rotary Eye & ENT Hospital here.
The meeting was organised to inform to all the members about election of Padam Shri Sushil Gupta as President of Rotary International (RI) for the year 2020-2021.
Sushil Gupta was elected unanimously by the World Nominating Committee constituted to elect the RI President.
A handout of Rotary Club stated that it is a matter of great pride for all the Rotarians of India and South Asia that a Rotarian from South Asia has been elected as World President of RI.
Sushil Gupta has visited Rotary Eye & ENT Hospital Udhampur so many times and recently dedicated Rotary Retina Care Centre to the people of J&K State in December 2017.
Gupta–hotelier by profession is an active environmentalist and a dedicated Rotarian who has made a mark in Indian travel and tourism industry. His legacy dates back to a renowned family of Amritsar, which took active part in the freedom struggle of India. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2007 by the President of India for his distinguished services to the tourism industry and social work.
Being actively involved in the hospitality industry for over three decades now he is the Chairman & Managing Director of Asian Hotels (West) Limited, having developed the Hyatt Regency properties at Delhi, Mumbai & Kolkata and the JW Marriott Hotel at Aerocity New Delhi.
Gupta has been a Rotarian since 1977, where he served Rotary Club of Delhi Midwest as President and his Rotary District 3010 as District Governor. He represented South Asia on the Board of Rotary International from 2003 to 2005. During his tenure as Director, he was instrumental in formulating Rotary’s policy on Rotarian Action Groups, which have redefined the way Rotary service projects are being conducted and advocated for water, as water is a core service area of Rotary International.
