NEW DELHI : India today reaffirmed its claim for a permanent membership of the UN Security Council, with Speaker Sumitra Mahajn stressing that ”Time has come for a vibrant Security Council.”
Ms Mahajan’s remarks came during her meeting with Secretary-General of United Nations Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in New York, the Speaker’s office said here.
To Mr Moon’s observation that India was a vibrant country, she further assured that ”India was ready to accept this new responsibility. Being the largest democracy of the world and an emerging economy, India will make the Security Council more vibrant and representative.”
Ms Mahajan observed that India had always supported UN-led democracy initiatives globally and democratic norms must also percolate in the institutions of global governance, including the United Nations. she stressed that Security Council must be reformed and restructured to reflect current political realities.
Observing that the lack of reforms has affected the credibility and effectiveness of the Security Council, Ms Mahajan hoped that Mr Moon’s leadership would provide an urgent fillip to reforms of UN. In this context, she stated that the 70th Anniversary of the UN provides a historic opportunity which must be grasped.
Expressing concern over the the recent incidences of terrorism in some of the countries, She said it was time for early conclusion of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT). (UNI)
