LEH, Aug 6: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Sukhnandan Kumar Chowdhary today after reaching Leh visited the flood affected villages of Shey, Thiksey and Chuchot.
On his way from Kargil to Leh, he visited Nimoo and Basgo and assessed the damages caused by heavy rain and cloud burst.
After assessing the damages and hearing the grievances of the flood affected families at Shey village, the Minister announced a relief of Rs. 20 lakh for immediate restoration works.
He also asked the concerned authorities to submit project proposal for the nallahs at the earliest possible.
At Thiksey, the Minister directed SE, PWD to clear and broaden the culvert on way to Thiksey monastery the blockage of which caused flood in the village. At Thiksey ration and tents have been provided by district administration to the affected people and JCBs have been deployed to clear the silt collected in the river bed and nallahs.
In Chuchot too some houses have collapsed due to flash flood and the river is diverted unevenly into the village posing further risk to public and private property. The affected people demanded alternative land at a safer place because they face this danger every year.
The Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner to assess the total land loss and provide alternative land to those whose land has been repeatedly affected by floods.
At Kargil, the Minister took stock of the drinking water facilities in the district and also of the damages caused by heavy rainfall.
MP, Thupstan Chewang apprised the Minister about the pending five nallahs projects which got damaged during 2010 flash flood in the district for which sanctioned funds are still not released from State. He urged the Minister to take up the issue with the concerned authorities to release the funds and also to pursue the six other projects for which the proposal stands submitted with the State Government.
The deputations from several areas also called on the visiting Minister and apprised him about their grievances. At Phyang, Nambardar Tashi Dorje urged the Minister to ensure early restoration of road connectivity to the upper region of village.
In upper Leh areas, Councilor Lobzang Nyantak urged the Minister to sanction funds for land reclamation, road connectivity, protection bund, restoration of irrigation khuls. The Councilor said that he has been running from pillar to post for the training of Leh nallah but nothing has happened till date.
A delegation from Beema village apprised the Minister about the prevailing sitation and demanded immediate steps for restoration of power supply and road link.
