JAMMU, Apr 25: A quadriplegic patient was operated successfully for spine surgery in Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu recently and now she has been showing good signs of recovery.
A 33 years-old-female came to the emergency unit of GMC after fall from a height with injury to her neck. The Patient was first stabilized and then thoroughly investigated. As the patient was quadriplegic, MRI was done on the same day with the quick efforts of Dr Kulbushan Gupta (HoD Radiology). The patient was diagnosed with Cervical Vertebrae fracture with Neurodeficit.
A meeting was held between Principal GMC Jammu Dr Shashi Sudan and HoD Orthopaedics Dr Sanjeev Gupta, HoD Anaesthesia Dr Anju Jamwal and Administrator Ashwani Khajuria regarding giving her a chance by early operative management as it generally takes 4-5 days for a patient to wait for his/her turn in the routine Operative list.
Despite the fact that there were very less chances of recovery, a decision was made for early intervention keeping in view young age of the patient and she was planned for spine surgery on the very next morning. The operating Orthopaedic team comprised of Dr Bias Dev (Consultant Orthopaedics) and his team. The surgery went uneventful after which she has been showing good signs of recovery.
Dr Shashi Sudan is monitoring the condition of the patient on daily basis. The Principal said that this case is an example to show how with co-ordinated team work for the best possible care of the patient, positive outcomes are bound to come.
