RAMBAN, Sept 26: The third-semester students of Government Degree College Ramban have been on hunger strike for the past six days on demand of swapping the subject under the banner of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Sumit Singh Manhas, Vice-President, ABVP GDC Ramban said that the students who got admission in first semester of FYUGP, in University of Jammu affiliated College GDC Ramban with Political Science as Major Subject and Geography as Minor Subject, now wanted to swap major and minor subjects to get geography as major subject and political science as minor subject as they have given the right to SWAP after the completion of First Year (i.e., during admission in 3rd semester) by New National Education Policy(NEP)-2020.
He said the order issued by the Higher Education Department(Govt. of J&K) dated 11/09/2022 and signed by the Under Secretary to the Government, the students shall be allowed to swap major/minor subjects in the 3rd semester and the swapping shall be as per the norms of affiliating University.
But for the last two months, students have submitted applications to the College Administration, memorandums to the University Authorities and talked phonically to some officials of Higher Education Department due to the unavailability of appointments, but these students haven’t get any positive response from any of them rather than demoralising the students.
Sumit Singh said that GDC Ramban has sufficient available faculty for teaching Geography as a Major subject and there is no deficiency of rooms or any basic infrastructure to start Geography as a Major subject.
He said it is the responsibility of the College Principal to send the representation to the Higher Education Department and University of Jammu so that Geography can be allotted as a Major subject in GDC Ramban. Protesting students said no officer from the administration has visited Degree College for redressing their grievances so for.
