RAJOURI, Apr 3: The campus of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) got tensed after the Valley based students locked the main gate of the Varsity demanding release of two arrested students, who were found involved in assault case of VI Semester student of the same institution.
However, University has ordered an internal inquiry into the incident by constituting a High Level inquiry Committee.
As per sources, some Valley based students of BGSBU assembled on the main gate of university today morning and sat on dharna demanding immediate release of students namely Junaid Bhat, son of Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, a resident of Sopore and Faheem Imtiaz, son of Hakim of Srinagar, who were arrested by police in case of assault on another university student namely Nikas Aslam, son of Mohammad Aslam resident of Surankote.
As the students who were protesting peacefully failed to get any heed from the Varsity Officials, they locked the main gate of the University at about 4:30 pm and refused to allow any vehicle to come out of the university, due to which the local staff got struck inside the University campus.
At about 5 pm, when University was called off and local faculty tried to come out of Varsity towards Rajouri town, these students refused to open the gate and local faculty members remained struck inside the University campus till 8:30 pm.
Amid sloganeering, the protesting students said that they will not open the main gate of University unless the arrested students were released by police.
After more than four hours of hostile situation of local faculty, at about 8:30 pm, Vice Chancellor of the University Prof IA Hamal and Registrar, Abdul Rasheed Chowdhary interacted with the protesting students and pacified the situation by assuring that university administration is in touch with police authorities after which protest was called off.
It is pertinent to mention here that a student namely Nikas Aslam, son of Mohammad Aslam resident of Surankote was assaulted in the University hostel on Tuesday evening by some fellow students after which a case was registered in Rajouri police station and five students were booked.
Meanwhile, according to a handout, University has ordered an internal inquiry into the incident by constituting a High Level inquiry Committee headed by Chief Proctor of the University along with 3-4 teachers as members of the committee.
“University will take stern action against the violators of the rules and regulations following the inquiry committee report”, the handout reads.
When contacted DC Rajouri, Deepti Uppal, told the EXCELSIOR that after having talks with protesting students and the BGSBU faculty, the arrested students were bailed out after completion of formalities. But investigation into the case is going on, she added.
