Students detained for protesting against use of loudspeaker

JAMMU, May 20: Amidst a high voltage drama and vociferous recitation of Hanuman Chalisa at GGM Science College, here today. some students were detained by Police for demanding ban on use of loudspeaker by a religious place in the college premises.
Police force entered into the college premises and whisked away at least two students, who were leading the protest against use of loudspeaker by a religious place inside the campus.
The trouble erupted this afternoon when a few students assembled on the college campus and vociferously started reciting Hanuman Chalisa to protest use of loudspeaker by a religious place in the premises.
They claimed that the use of loudspeaker for prayers disturbed studies and class work of the students. “Despite repeated requests to the College Principal as well as the district administration, no step was taken to stop the use of loudspeaker and today we lodged our peaceful protest by reciting Hanuman Chalisa,” said Piyush Gupta, who was leading the protesting students.
Soon after the recitation of Hanuman Chalisa concluded, a contingent of Police force, led by SP City, Kulbir Handa, appeared on the college campus and confronted the protesting students. Besides dispersing the protesters, Police whisked away at least two students, who were leading the protest.
According to the college Principal, Dr Ravinder Tikku, the students had approached him seeking ban on use of loudspeaker by the religious place but a decision in this regard was to be taken by the district administration.
