Student and suicide

Sir,
Refer news item ‘Student ends life following out of syllabus paper’ DE Oct 30.
The failure to perform well in the Board Examination led a 12th class students to commit suicide. His death in this manner underscores the fact that our education system needs to be further reformed to enable the students achieve education in true sense. Besides, the BOSE should take precaution to ensure that papers are set according to syllabus prescribed to students for the academic year. It has been observed most of the times that paper setters remain careless while setting the papers. This can be found from the errors that are highlighted by the students while sitting for examinations. Then comes the ‘Marking stage’ in which examiners do not take much pains to mark them in a fair manner. After results are announced, one can see huge rush of students for checking, rechecking or re-evaluation of papers. This process is not only time consuming but involves financial involvement. At times it has been found that answer sheets have remained unmarked. In some cases calculation of marks has been shoddy. All these steps lead students to frustration, and at times force students to take extreme steps like suicide.
