The focus of the administration is always on empowering the grass root level workers. Nambardar and Chowkidar are the two most important persons in the villages from Raja and Maharajas eras. Despite the digital and internet age, these two have not lost their importance even in today’s modern era. The Nambardars are the extended arm of the administration with the responsibilities of assistance in revenue and rent collection, assistance to revenue officials in maintaining land records, reporting any encroachment in his area, the ombudsman in small disputes, reporting any incident and subsequent losses, recording births and deaths, outbreak of any disease, care of government property, report about antisocial elements and many more important assignments. They are also responsible for the cleanliness of the villages and water bodies, reporting the performance of local bodies and upkeep of water bodies under various schemes. Similarly, Chowkidars are the eyes and ears of police and administration providing first-hand information at meagre expenses. The role of both of these is of much more importance in terrorism-hit areas as on-ground timely updates are relevant for the administration to decide the future course of action. Methods are age-old but very significant in the present security and development scenario. The peacekeeper role of Nambardar is of much significance to minorities, the administration’s dependency and impartial decision-making of Nambardar are building blocks of peace and prosperity of the villages. Chief Secretary has rightly directed to remove non-performing Nambardars and Chowkidars and fill all the vacant positions immediately. Practically no building can be stable for long if two pillars are missing or not up to the mark. The suggestions of Nambardar are of prime value in maintaining law and order and development. In this WhatsApp age, timely information is a real asset as such use of technology is a must and should be incorporated without any delay. Villages can be peaceful and develop only when all main characters work in unison.
