Srinagar, Aug 1: Kashmir valley including summer capital Srinagar received heavy spell of rains this afternoon leading to water-logging in parts of Srinagar city.
Since morning, black clouds were hovering over city while gusty winds started in noon followed by stormy rains amidst lightening. The rains, which continued for about 30 minutes, caused water-logging in city parts including in commercial hub Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas. The 30-minute downpour also choked the drains in the city.
The city received 17.9 millimeter rain, which is highest in valley, a Meteorological Department official said this evening.
The water-logging, once again, caused immense inconvenience to people and particularly to pedestrians. The rain water also entered many shops in Sarai Bala and Magarmal Bagh areas of the city forcing shopkeepers to shift goods to upper shelves.
Director Meteorological Department, Sonam Lotus, told Excelsior that there is forecast of rain spells for next two days. “There is forecast of rains for next couple of days. But, the downpour won’t continue for hours. It would be just rain spell like we witnessed today,” he said.
Reports of rainfall were also received from northern and southern districts of the valley.
A diversion was washed away in Rohmoo village of Pulwama district after flash floods in Romshi nallah caused due to a cloud burst last evening which claimed life of a youth. The locals staged a protest against District Administration for failing to construct a concrete bridge at the place of diversion. Due to washing away of diversion and a wooden bridge, the traffic Rahmoo-Pulwama road came to a halt.
