JAMMU, Dec 19: The SRTC workers today held strong protest at the Corporation complex, on Railway Road here today against the decision of the CAPD Department to hire private trucks on commission basis for the transportation of  food grains in the State.
The CAPD workers,  under the banner of Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation Workers Union, led by Wajahat Hussain- chairman  and Ashok Mehra , vice chairman assembled in the office complex of Managing Director SRTC here and started protest demonstration. They were strongly opposing the decision of the Govt and especially the CAPD Department,  to hire private trucks, by ignoring  SRTC fleet in violation of SRO -157.
The Union leaders  Wajahat Hussain, Ashok Mehra  and Paramjit Singh- president,  claimed that as per SRO,  it is mandatory for the CAPD to hire SRTC fleet for this purpose, but some people in the Government by misleading Cabinet managed to get an order issued  in this regard  to provide benefit to their favourite transporters. They urged upon  the Chief Minister to intervene and withdraw this order otherwise, SRTC workers would launch indefinite agitation.
They further said that It was declared by the Govt to purchase 200 new buses and 300 trucks for the SRTC and it was also declared in the Assembly by the minister concerned but even after one year nothing has been visible on the ground. They said that Government must honour its commitment to strengthen SRTC fleet. The CAPD is said to be going for issuing tenders for hiring trucks but the SRTC will strongly oppose this move, they maintained.
The SRTC Workers Union held protest dharna for about three hours  and warned to continue the same if the Govt failed to review its decision. They said that SRTYC is already facing financial crisis and trucks were engaged with CAPD just to improve its condition but this decision of new Govt would again bring the Corporation in much losses providing benefit to their favourites. They suspected connivance of some top CAPD officials  and a few wealthy transporters in this deal.
