Srinagar, Dec 6: The Srinagar-Ladakh national highway was opened for vehicular traffic after clearance of snow while the Mughal Road connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri in Jammu division remained closed, a traffic police official said.
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was also opened for vehicular traffic for both sides, the official said, adding heavy motor vehicles would only be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu.
He said, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the road pressed into service its men and machinery and cleared the accumulated snow on Ladakh highway at Zojila pass, Gumri, Captain More and Kargil making it traffic-worthy.
More than a foot of snow was accumulated on the highway on Sunday.
Trucks loaded with essential commodities besides other vehicles were allowed to cross the Zojila pass, the sources said.
The strategically placed Mughal Road remained closed for the third consecutive day on Tuesday due to snow accumulation caused on Sunday.
The snow clearance operation which was taken up on Monday could not continue due to the slippery road conditions, the traffic official added.
Snow clearance operation is also going on at Razdan top and Gurez roads in Bandipora district of north Kashmir which were also closed as a precautionary measure following a fresh snowfall Sunday.
Besides Keran and Karnah roads in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara were also being cleared, the traffic official added. (Agencies)
