SRINAGAR : Due to incessant snowfall in the past 24 hours, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained closed for the second day today.
A large number of Srinagar bound trucks, carrying essentials besides some passenger vehicles remained stranded since December 30 evening on the highway which is connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
No vehicle, however, has been allowed from Jammu or Srinagar since yesterday, official sources said.
They said there was about four feet of snow accumulated on the road near Jawahar tunnel. Several feet of snow was recorded at Banihal and other areas, they said, adding, “At Patnitop, a tourist resort on the highway in Jammu region, about three feet of snow was recorded in the past 24 hours.”
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service the sophisticated machines and men to clear the snow on the highway.
At some places, however, the snow had frozen, making the snow clearance operation a little difficult.
Inspector General of Police (traffic) Muneer Ahmad Khan said, “Any decision to allow traffic movement will be taken only after reviewing the snow clearance and condition of the road.”
Srinagar bound vehicles, however, at several places would be allowed to move towards their respective destinations once the snow is cleared and road is declared safe for journey. (AGENCIES)
