Sridevi: Bollywood diva with sparkling eyes & versatility no more

NEW DELHI: Sridevi, the Bollywood diva, who entertained cinegoers for over four decades with her sparkling eyes, her infectious smile and versatility as actor, is no more.
Veteran actress Sridevi , the wife of producer Boney Kapoor, died late on Saturday night due to cardiac arrest in Dubai, where she had gone along with her family to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding, trade sources said on Sunday.
While some of her family members returned from Dubai after the wedding, Sridevi, Boney and her younger daughter Khushi stayed back.
Her elder daughter — Janhvi — had not travelled with the family because of the shooting schedule for her upcoming Bollywood film.
Known for her sparkling eyes and her infectious smile, Sridevi established a niche for herself in the film industry with her versatility as actor and her ability to essay a wide variety of roles in Bollywood films as well as in South Indian films.
Making her debut as a child artist in in Tamil film “Thunaivan” in 1969, Sridevi made a mark for herself in South Indian films before entering Bollywood.
She worked in Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada films.
Entering the Mumbai film industry with “Solva Sawan” in 1978, Sridevi catapulted to limelight in Bollywood with “Himmatwala” .
She went on to star in several hit, from ‘Tohfa’ to ‘Mawsad’ to ‘Nageena’ to ‘Mr India” , “Chandni” and ‘Lamhe’.
In fact, along with Madhuri Dixit, she was among the top ranking actresses in Bollywood in the 1990s.
While getting box office success, Sridevi earned critical acclaim with her roles in Sadma” (1983), “ChaalBaaz” (1989), “Lamhe” (1991), and “Gumrah” (1993).
She made her mark with her sparkling eyes, amazing screen presence and her versatility as an actor.
After starring in her home production “Judaai”, co-starring Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar, Sridevi went on a break to tend to her family.
In 2012, Sridevi made a comeback with Gauri Shinde’s ‘English Vinglish’.
She earned a lot of acclaim with her performance in ‘English Vinglish’ as a middle-class woman, learning to speak English to feel accepted by her family.
Last year, she was seen in revenge-drama, ‘Mom’, opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna. She also shot for a special appearance in superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film, ‘Zero’, which releases in December.
Sridevi was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour, in 2013. (AGENCIES)
