Spurious drugs

About a year ago, much hullaballoo was raised by the patients and civil society when it was revealed that many drugs supplied to Government hospitals and the retail sellers in the market were spurious and not fit to be administered. Inquiry set up by the Health Department took up the matter and seized many drugs for laboratory test. Drugs not fit for administering were identified and a case was processed against the producers and suppliers of these drugs. The Government gave out that it was going to take serious action against this grave irregularity. Along time has passed and nobody knows till date what action was taken against the defaulters.
Now, the Governor has taken serious notice of this case. He has issued instructions to the Director of Drug and Food Control Organization to take immediate action against the manufacturers of spurious drugs. At least 27 out of a total of 156 samples of drugs lifted are worth 21 lakh rupees have been found sub-standard. Along has passed and nobody knows what action the Government took against the manufacturers who were suspended. What about lakhs and crores of rupees they have pocketed against the sale of spurious drugs? Are not they required to return that money to the rightful owners and also pay a heavy fine for playing with the health of innocent people? The Governor has sought a status report from the Director and the action taken. Obviously, no action has been taken and in all probability political pressure has been allowed to supervene. This is a serious issue in which the health of millions of people is involved. It is a crime against humanity and they should not go scot free.
The right thing to do would be to black list those manufacturing fake drugs and thus seal their fate. The Medical Council of India should develop a mechanism so that any drug found fake is banned for sale in any part of the country. The Health authorities are  answerable for not making drugs purchasing process to go through the rules prescribed in the desk book. Those who are found negligent of their duty and responsibility have to be brought to the books.
