CHENNAI, May 19: For the first time in India, a speciality training course on “Diabetes in Pregnancy” exclusively meant for medical professionals, particularly gynaecologists, will be started from June under the auspices of DIPSI (Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group India).
This was disclosed today by Dr Jitendra Singh, National Professor of Diabetes, after the conclusion of DIPSI Core Group meeting held here to discuss the format and syllabus of the proposed course. Talking to the media, Dr Jitendra Singh said that under the guidance of world renowned, Chennai based Diabetologist and Convenor of the WHO, Prof V Seshiah, India will have the distinction of being one of the first countries in the world to start such a course.
The final details of the proposed course will be decided in the next few days  after more deliberations among DIPSI Core Group members, the first meeting of which on the subject was held here today under the chairmanship of Dr V Seshiah. Besides Dr Jitendra, Dr Samar Banerjee, Dr Subhash Wangnoo, Dr Rakesh Sahay, Dr Hema Divaker and Dr Paneerselvam attended the meeting. He said that the proposed specialist course on the subject will impart applied training on how early, when and how often to evaluate a woman who is planning pregnancy or is already pregnant besides the modalities and options of treatment currently available in such situations, he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh said that the proposed course will aim at raising a specialised group of physicians and gynaecologists across the country who will possess the know-how to discharge this crucial responsibility.
