JAMMU, Nov 17: An institutional visit was organised for the students of first semester, Department of Law, University of Jammu by Gandhi Nagar Police Station, today. The purpose of this visit was to make law students aware about their interaction with police in their professional lives. Various aspects of crime, registration, investigation and trials were discussed in detail.
SP South Sandeep Choudhary interacted with students on a wide range of topics which included Indian and American law system, gender sensitisation and various scholarships available for law students throughout the world. He emphasised on the value of rule of law for any society.
Police and lawyers must ensure that a lawful and just society is created around us. The economic and social fabric of every country is dependent on its system of justice. Criminal justice system of India is under heavy obligation to deliver. There are many challenges which hinder swift justice delivery on occasions. But it is the duty of police and lawyers to ensure that the path towards justice for a victim becomes less cumbersome,” he added.
The SP further said that every police officer has a territory where he is responsible while a lawyer has entire nation as territory. “Police ends its story in a crime with filing chargesheet and then lawyer steps in. Three persons of law then see the case (defence lawyer, public prosecutor and judge) and decide the fate of any criminal case. Although both work on their own and normally Court is the place where he has to come, finally”.
He further added that many of the students of today will become prosecutors of tomorrow. While a prosecutor is an officer of the court, who helps the judge arrive at the right decision, they are also an officer of the executive branch of the state with the onerous responsibility of prosecuting criminals who violate the law.
“The rampant problem of drugs in society is one challenge that the police and lawyers must fight together. Police must ensure thorough investigation and avoid procedural lapses in such cases. Lawyers should try to get the drug dealers convicted in the court of law. It is the criminal justice system that differentiates a civilized society from anarchy. The moral duty of police and lawyers towards is much larger than merely doing their jobs. If the criminal justice system can deliver in timely manner, the society will become better for all”, Choudhary said.
SDPO South Rafiq Manhas and DySP Dr. Sunniya Wani also interacted with students on this occasion. They made the students aware about the procedures of registration of FIR, investigation and final reports produced in the court of law. Students and faculty were of the opinion that such institutional visits will go a long way in improving criminal justice system.
