SRINAGAR, Aug 19: A Charter Ceremony was held today at the Government College of Education, uniting women from international, national, and regional platforms. Soroptimist International, a renowned women’s organization advocating women’s rights and socio-economic empowerment globally, marked this event.
Led by Gulafroz Jan and Rizwana, the ceremony commenced with the lighting of the lamp by President Parveen Pandit, accompanied by club members. Mir Insha Farooq, the club’s Secretary, extended a warm welcome to attendees including SI sisters, Cathy Cottridge – President of Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland, and Chief Guest Prof. Neelofer Khan from the University of Kashmir.
Zainab Riyaz, the Club Communication Officer, articulated the organization’s Vision and Mission. Gurmeet Kaur introduced Cathy Cottridge, highlighting her symbolic presence representing Soroptimist’s global reach. The Chartering of SI Srinagar (Kashmir) and the formal investiture of leadership responsibilities were emphasized as poignant moments.
Anitha Rajarajan, Organisational Development Officer, recounted the journey leading to this milestone. Anu Wakhlu shed light on the organization’s role in addressing contemporary challenges and shaping the future. SI Srinagar’s President, Prof. Parveen Pandit, was introduced for her contributions to women’s issues and Higher Education.
Amidst felicitations from distinguished guests like Maureen, Nisha Ghosh, Kulsum, Naina Shah, Jyothi Prasad, Jaya Ahuja, Papia Mukherjee, Angmo Konchok, and Zareen, the new club was honoured for its global contributions.
The event showcased SI Srinagar’s projects and received a special address from Prof. Pam Rajput, commending the charter. Chief Guest Prof. Nilofar Khan highlighted the significance of women’s empowerment and visibility through organizations like Soroptimist International.
A vibrant cultural display concluded the event, followed by a vote of thanks by Insha Mir. Media coverage was conducted by Zainab Riyaz, Farkhanda Ana, and Nida Shah from the club. The Charter Ceremony exemplified Soroptimist International’s commitment to global progress in women’s empowerment.
