Social Media ac/s need to be compulsorily verified: Manish Tiwari

PUNE, Sept 17: Former Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Manish Tiwari on Saturday said all social media accounts need to be compulsorily verified.
We can’t allow anonymity masquerade as privacy and anonymous accounts can’t escape rigours of the law, he said adding that media should rebuild its revenue model to overcome the dominance of noise on its platform.
Mr Tiwari here in the session-5 ‘Bharatiya Media Ruled by Noise or Ruled by Law’ at the 12th Bharatiya Chhatra Sansad (BCS) – Indian Student Parliament organised by MIT World Peace University, MIT School of Government (MIT-SOG), Pune.
UNESCO Chair Holder Revered Prof Dr Vishwanath D Karad, Founder and Chief Patron, MAEER’s MIT, Pune & President, MIT World Peace University along with Rahul V. Karad, Executive President, MAEER, MIT World Peace University & Chief Initiator, MIT-SOG; Aprameya Radhakrishna, CEO & Co-founder, Koo; Ashutosh, Senior Journalist, Co-founder, satyahindi.com; Saurabh Dwivedi, Founding Editor, Lallantop, Editor, India Today Hindi; Irom Sharmila, Civil Right Activist; Dr. Anshul Avijit, National Spokesperson, Indian National Congress; Hema Sardesai, Singer and Social Activist were present on the occasion.
Tiwari said, The future of humankind will lie at the intersection of physical and virtual civilisations. With the rise of social media, certain elements essentially have turned into university of lies and spreading disinformation.
Intolerance for other people’s point of view is also increasing. Revenue generated from gathering eyeballs and further measured by a flawed measuring mechanism is leading to dominance of noise on media platforms. Unless media rebuilds its revenue model, there is little hope left.
Saurabh Dwivedi said, We need to listen to the ‘noise’ within ourselves. Media’s role is to provoke viewers to question everyone including journalists, politicians, teachers etc and in the process enable the process of knowledge gathering.
Citizens can also talk sense on social media. The responsibility of media is to preserve this plurality of views.
