Snow disrupts traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway

SRINAGAR :  Traffic on the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was disrupted for several hours this morning following avalanches and fresh snowfall.
However, the traffic was resumed at 0900 hrs and hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and empty trucks and oil tankers, stopped at Qazigund and different places were allowed to move towards Jammu.    Only one-way traffic is being allowed on the highway to avoid any accident and traffic jam because of snowfall and slippery road conditions for the past one week. This, officials, said will continue till further orders.    A traffic police official told UNI that there were few minor snow avalanches on this side of the Jawahar tunnel, forcing closure of the highway.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway, immediately put into service men and sophisticated machine to put through the traffic from Srinagar to Jammu at 0900 hrs.    There was also light snowfall on both sides of the tunnel early this morning, he said.
He said subject to road and weather conditions, traffic will be allowed from Jammu to Srinagar tomorrow.    Meanwhile, the national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state, remained closed since last month due to snowfall and slippery road conditions between Sonamarg-Zojila and Meenmarg.
The Muhgal road also remained closed due to some reasons for the past few weeks.
