Srinagar, June 14: Resident doctors at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital here today staged massive protests and abstained from duties against thrashing of a medico allegedly by cops led by a senior officer.
The protesting doctors said that a senior police officer whose mother is admitted in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) thrashed an on-duty doctor Dr Owais last night. “Dr Owais was attending the cop’s mother as she is on ventilator. He started to harass the doctor on the pretext of treating his mother. The doctor asked the cop to keep calm but instead the officer along with his sub-ordinates started thrashing him ruthlessly,” the medicos said.
According to the medicos, the doctor was “brutally assaulted” and “even strangulated” by the policemen. “He has sustained injuries and he is admitted to triage ward of the hospital,” they said and demanded strict action against the erring policemen. The protesting doctors staged massive protests at Government Medical College and abstained from their duties which caused inconvenience to the patients at Kashmir’s premier hospital.
Meanwhile, authorities today ordered probe into the incident. The GMC principal and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan held a meeting in this regard while officials of the District Administration and police also visited the GMC. However Resident Doctors Association (RDA) demanded “prompt action” against the erring cops. “We don’t need any probe assurance but action,” said a spokesman of RDA.
